When you wear a double Albert chain necklace, you are wearing a piece of history. Said to be named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, the double Albert was originally a pocket watch chain. One end held the watch and the other held the winding key or sometimes an accessory. This could be a small locket or a fob pendant for stamping one's seal for example, hence the large swivel clasps at either end, which prevented the watch and the fob from twisting. The central T-bar was then attached to a suitable waistcoat buttonhole for security.
A solid gold double Albert chain was a status symbol and a sign of a discerning gentleman, but when those same gentlemen went to the trenches in WWI, their wives took to wearing the chain around the neck to be closer to their loved ones in the hope they would return. It has been a fashionable accessory ever since.
