This mahogany sgian dubh features a solid sterling silver band at the base of its hand carved, basket weave handle. The solid sheath, or scabbard, has a matching silver band while the delicate grain of the hardwood has been left on view. It conceals an 87mm long stainless steel blade inside. Its sleek, modern design, nicknamed the cigar, allows it to sit comfortably when worn and is suitable for daywear as well as more formal occasions.
It is approximately 18cm (7 inches) long and it is supplied in a deluxe faux leather presentation box.
The sgian dubh is literally the black or dark knife in Scots Gaelic. It has been an essential part of both formal and informal highland dress since the early 1800's. Traditionally, it is placed in the hose, or long sock, on the same side as the dominant hand of the wearer. The dubh, or dark part of the name, is reputed to refer to the fact that it was once a hidden weapon. Today, the handle is left on view to confirm the wearer bears no ill will to his host, though it remains handy if needed.
